To have a website you will need an account with an internet service provider (ISP) and the easiest way of getting one is to let me do it for you, but if you want to know what t is involved, read on. As I said, in the last frame, a parish or town council is entitled to use a .gov name, but you cannot host a government site on a free server. Nominet, the authority that issues the dot-gov names will only deal with accredited web-space suppliers they won’t talk to individuals, you ( or more likely I) have to find an ISP, give them the details and they apply to nominet on your behalf.

Once you have found such a company, it is no more difficult to set-up a .gov site than any other. We agree how much space, bandwidth or whatever, fill in the form on  http://www.ja.net/documents/naming/naming-template.html and instruct them to proceed, they do it for you. Provided you don’t ask for anything that contravenes their naming rules, the whole process takes about 10 days.

A word about naming- all tiers of local government, and their county associations can have a dot-gov site, but you have to follow the rules; its yourname-pc or yournamepc for Parishes, yourname-tc or yournametc for Towns, yourname-alc or yournamealc for County Associations. Do not try and get round this, because Nominet will not listen. The last name to slip through the net was the Essex Association's site www.ealc.gov.uk , I'm quite proud of that little bit of rebellion, but I don't know why.

To give you an idea of the cost of hosting a site (that is, renting the storage space for your little bit of the internet).

yourname.gov.uk                                                                        will cost about £15 per month

yourname.org   yourname.co.uk, yourname.info                     will cost about £10 per month
yourname.teso.net, yourname.freeserve.co.uk                       will be free
